1860-1865 Wells & Wolverhampton: Most of February 1865 I spent at Bedles (Beadales), nursing Uncle (Stephen) Lowdell. Uncle Lowdell was a gentleman by birth and education; he was a Wykemist and proud of his School; he was intended for the Law, but fate ruled otherwise; his father placed him in an iron business in Lewes; though cultured and refined he did not shirk business. He married a Miss Grantham and had two sons. His wife was killed by an accident on the road to Clay Hill. He afterwards married Aunt Jane (Verrall), and with her a fortune. . . . So years passed; in 1864 I went from Wolverhampton for my usual visit; one evening Uncle Lowdell said, 'You ought to know that your Aunt and I have always intended Bedles to come to you.' I was taken aback! and remonstrated, mentioning his sons. 'Oh, they have had all that they ought to have; I have paid their debts many times; they have broken my heart.' ... In February 1865 he was very ill and sent for me. I arrived and Uncle Lowdell said 'I shall not recover: he gave me directions as to his burial and then said 'Go to my solicitor at Lewes, Mr. Currey, and ask him to come at once.' I told him what had transpired and urged him to speak for the sons. After his interview with Uncle Lowdell, Mr. Currey said he had said all he could; but the mention of their names made Uncle Lowdell turn pale and say 'they have broken my heart.' So Uncle Lowdell's will was made and he died in my arms on March 5th. I consulted Mr. Currey and as a result I undertook if I survived Aunt Jane, to settle 10,000 pounds, possibly Lowdell money, on the children of S. and H.D. Lowdell. I did survive Aunt Jane and carried out my undetaking; and had much ingratitude and trouble in consequence!”

Stephen Lowdell acquiring Cudwells farmhouse
Added by tskhan on 4 Apr 2007

At the junction of the Haywards Heath, Cuckfield and Lewes road is the Bedales estate and this will hold us up for some time with local history. In old documents Bedales was named Bedles Hill. Some old maps give the spelling Beadles Hill. The old house was built in 1577, and -owned by a family named Barham. About 1832 the property, including Cudwells (old time spelling Cuddles) farmhouse and some 600 acres of land, was acquired by the late Mr. Stephen Lowdell, a member of a very old Hampshire family, who married as his second wife Miss Jane Verrall, of Southover Manor, Lewes. After their death the property passed to the Rev. Frederic Willett. A., nephew of Mrs. Lowdell. Mr. and Mrs. Lowdell lived in the original house for some time and planted the well-known yew hedge, a feature of the roadside. Mr. Lowdell obtained the consent of the authorities of those times to divert the public high road, which then passed close to the house, to land which he gave in exchange. He pulled down the old house and built the present house in 1847. A part of the original house, the cellars, brewhouse, bakehouse, laundry, c, were retained, and the old gallery, a striking feature of the Bedales mansion, was put back into the present house. All ciie stone used in the building came from Mr. Lowdell's own quarry at Scaynes .hill.

Bedales House
Added by tskhan on 25 Apr 2007
From Joan Willett's diary: Jane Lowdell nee Verrall built Bedales on the site of an old house, leaving parts which used to be the house of the Berham family (Ingoldsby Legends]. She left the property to Rev. Frederic Willett, her nephew who made it over to his son F. Wilfred B. Willett, DSO, Col. Royal Sussex Regiment. Jane Lowdell was a second wife and is supposed to haunt Bedales. The house is, on good authority, said to be haunted by an old woman and also a small child. "Bedales", Lindfield, Sussex is listed for sale in "Country Life" - March 14, 1952 by Wilson & Co., London, as follows (includes pictures): Charming stone-built house dating from the 16th century. Set within superbly timbered gardens, park and woodlands. Lounge hall, 4 reception rooms, 13 bed and dressing rooms, 5 bathrooms. Main services. Central heating. Oil-fired boilers. Garages for 6 cars. 2 entrance lodges. Fine modern cottage. Swimming pool. Hard tennis court. Productive kitchen garden. Small home farm with useful farm buildings. For sale with 45 acres. Vacant possession.
