Thomas Groser
(born 17th September 1781, died January 1828) Thomas was born in ###, the youngest son of Christopher Groser (1738-1805) and Ann Wallace (b.1746). He married Charlotte Sophia Phillipina Smith (1775-1837) at St Mary-le-Bone on 21st June 1804. Charlotte was the daughter of Captain George Frederick Smith, RN (1727-1783), and the Baroness Sophia Charlotte von Kalkreuth (1738-1817). Baroness Kalkreuth was the sister of Friedrich Adolf, Count von Kalkreuth (1737-1818), the Prussian Field Marshal who married Mary Groser, Thomas’s aunt. See the Count’s write-up. Thomas was appointed to the post of Colonial Secretary of the Island of Jamaica, and they departed from Gravesend on 13th October 1805, arriving at Port Royal, Kingston, Jamaica on 30th November. He held this post until he died in 1828. He was also Colonel of the St Catherine’s Regiment and in command of His Imperial Majesty’s forces in Jamaica. He was under the command of his brother-in-law General Sir John Frederick Sigismund Smith (1764-1834) who was Commander-in-Chief of all the West Indian forces. They had seven children: • Thomas Francis (1805-1818) who was born in London and died at the age of thirteen at Port Charles in Jamaica • Frederick Dilkes (b.1806-1808) who was born in Jamaica and died aged two at Port Royal, Jamaica • George Groser (b.1808) who died as a baby in Jamaica • George Brown (1810-1866) who was born at Spanish Town, Jamaica and died in Brooklyn, New York • William Oldham (1812-1863) who was born at St Catherine, Jamaica and also died in Brooklyn, New York • Sophia (1816-1816) who died when only a few hours old • Thomas Wentworth (1818-1885), who was born in Spanish Town, St Catherine, Jamaica. He married Mary Elizabeth Haskins of Roxbury, USA. He is the grandfather of Rev St John Beverley Groser (1809-1966), the radical priest and social reformer in the East end of London (see their separate write-ups). Charlotte emigrated to the United States of America with her three surviving children after the death of her husband in or around 1835, settling in New York. Both the American and the Australian branches of the Groser family are descended from their three children. Sources 1. Groser family papers 2. www.groserfamilies.com |
