With very great regret we record the death of Mrs. Lowdell, which took place at Oundle on December 11th after a very short illness. She was married on August 4th, 1886, to Mr. J. G. Lowdell (Hornstein), who was at that time assistant housemaster at Sidney House. Her sudden death will be a real grief to many O.O.s, especially to those of an earlier period, who held her in high regard. The sympathy of all who knew him will be with Mr. Lowdell in this time of sorrow.

In Memoriam for J G Lowdell published in The Laxtonian
Added by tskhan on 24 Apr 2007

J. G. LOWDELL.

J. G. Lowdell, better known to boys of an older generation as J. G. Hornstein, came to Oundle as Modern Languages Master early in 1879 and was closely associated with the School for 55 years.

For some years he was assistant master in School House under St. John Reade, when the Headmaster himself lived at Cobthorne in West Street and the boys were housed in the old building in the Churchyard. In 1881 a new boarding-house (Sidney) was started, and soon moved to the upper part of what is now New House. Lowdell was in charge of the boys' studies across the road in the Albion Rooms.

In 1888 he married Miss Lowdell, whose name many years later he adopted, and soon after took over the duties of School Secretary in addition to his ordinary School work. The numbers in the School were then about 120, but they diminished to 92 in 1892, after which date they steadily rose, and the Secretary's duties became constantly heavier. He had charge of books and stationery, kept the School account books, sent out School bills; and without any assistant discharged the miscellaneous duties of a secretary in addition to a full timetable as a Modern Language teacher. Of these secretarial duties he was relieved in 1911, but continued to teach until 1922, when a partial breakdown in health compelled his retirement, but he returned in 1924 to take a few classes. This work gave him the greatest pleasure until Christmas, 1933, when he definitely gave up his School work.

Though too short-sighted to be an athlete Lowdell had many outdoor interests, and certainly played for the Masters' Cricket XI against the School on many occasions. In the early days he rode his" penny-farthing " cycle all over the county to places of architectural or archaeological interest, and almost to the end of his life would say that he seldom walked less than 50 miles a week. He often took reading parties abroad, and some of those still at Oundle who went with him to Parame can remember him as a delightful holiday companion. He was a man of wide culture, and his house was filled with books in many languages. In earlier days he published a novel, "Warped," under the name of John Garth, and later a delightful book, “Caravan Tales”. At the time of his death he had just finished the MS. of “Fifty-five Years at Oundle," and it is hoped that a work of much interest to ll connected with the School or town will find a publisher. His foreword to the book was to have concluded as follows: "It has been my singular and happy lot to have enjoyed the esteem and goodwill of generations of boys, each of whom has been a friend to me ... May they flourish and abound, and in the quiet of their hearts affectionately remember the man they used to know as “Old Horney”.

He leaves three sons, of whom the two eldest joined the services and fought through the Great War. His wife died in December, 1930.
