Christopher Grosser
(born 4th July 1695, died ##) The first definite record we have of the Groser family in England is the marriage of Christopher Grosser (note the spelling) and Bridget Collins at St Martin in the Fields, London, on 16th August 1735. Family legend, passed down through both the American and Australian branches of the family, states that he was attached to the court of George, Elector of Hanover, who became George I of England in 1715, and that he came to England with the new king. However Windsor Castle have no record of a Christopher Grosser in their archives. It appears from German IGI records that his parents were Samuel Grosser (1673-1705) and Anna Maria Windisch (1668-1741) both of whom were born in Struppen, Dresden and died in Struppen. Christopher was born in Dresden in 1695 and he had two older brothers, Johann Georg and Samuel, both of whom also died in Germany. Anna Maria’s father was Jacob Windisch (1636-1699) also from Struppen. Christopher and Bridget had three children on whom we have information (note the change in spelling of their surname): • Christopher Groser (1738-1805), our direct ancestor. See his separate write-up • William Groser (b.1747) who died in Sydney, Australia • Mary Groser (b.1750) who married Frederich Adolf, Count von Kalkreuth (1737-1818), a Prussian army officer. See his separate write-up. There were four other Groser who lived in London at this time and may also be their children: • John Groser • Joseph Groser • Nicholas Groser • Samuel Groser. His profession is not known, although he may have been connected to the royal court. Sources 1.
